Why is USS Salem (CA-139) said to be haunted?
Commissioned in 1949 as the last of the Des Moines-class heavy cruisers, USS Salem (CA-139) patrolled the Atlantic and Mediterranean during the tense opening years of the Cold War before being decommissioned in 1959. Today she sits open to the public as a museum ship in Quincy, Massachusetts, where volunteers and overnight ghost-tour guests have long reported footsteps echoing through the empty engine rooms, hatches that swing shut on their own, and a sense of being watched in the fire-control spaces below deck. Some crew veterans who return for reunions say the ship still "feels crewed," attributing the atmosphere to sailors who served aboard during her decade of active duty. Paranormal investigation groups have run overnight events on the ship since the 2000s.
