Why is USS Yorktown (CV-10) said to be haunted?

Commissioned in April 1943 as a replacement for the Yorktown sunk at Midway, this Essex-class carrier earned 11 battle stars fighting across the Pacific and later recovered the Apollo 8 command module from the ocean in December 1968. Permanently docked as a museum ship at Patriots Point since 1975, the carrier lost dozens of crewmen to combat, accidents and fires during its service, and former sailors who now volunteer aboard describe hatches that seem to close on their own, footsteps on the empty hangar deck at night, and a lingering smell of cigarette smoke in areas where smoking was banned decades ago. The ship has become a fixture of paranormal television investigations, its steel corridors offering, in one veteran guide's words, "more history per square foot than almost anywhere else in the state."
