Why is Willard Library said to be haunted?

Incorporated in 1881 and opened to the public in 1885 in Evansville, Indiana, Willard Library is the oldest public library building in the state still operating in its original structure, a Gothic Revival design by James W. Reid. Since at least the 1930s, staff and patrons have reported the "Grey Lady," a veiled female apparition in old-fashioned dress seen drifting through the genealogy stacks and basement, sometimes trailing the scent of perfume. The sightings grew frequent enough that in 2001 the library installed live webcams throughout the building β€” reportedly the first library in the country to do so specifically for ghost-watching β€” letting the public monitor the stacks from home. Local legend links the Grey Lady to founder Willard Carpenter, whose family disputes over the building are said to have left her spirit unsettled.
