What is Flathead Lake Monster?
Montana's Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States, has hosted stories of a large, dark, serpentine or hump-backed creature since at least 1889, when a steamboat captain reported a sighting later published in a local newspaper. Sightings clustered through the following century, with a particularly active period in the 1990s when researcher Laney Hanzel and others logged dozens of eyewitness reports of a shape estimated at 20 to 40 feet long, moving with a series of humps breaking the surface. A 1993 Kalispell newspaper account quoted one boater: "It moved like a big snake swimming, not like any fish rolling I've ever seen." Local guides sometimes call the creature "Flessie," echoing Scotland's Nessie, and the legend is treated with affectionate local pride rather than tourist spectacle. Fisheries biologists point out that Flathead Lake holds white sturgeon and very large lake trout capable of producing wake patterns easily mistaken for a single long creature, and that standing waves generated by boat traffic on the lake's open, 28-mile length can create serpentine surface disturbances that fool even experienced observers into believing they saw a single moving body.
