Why is Geiser Grand Hotel said to be haunted?

Opened in 1889 during Baker City's gold rush boom, the Geiser Grand was advertised as "the Queen of the Mines" and the finest hotel between Portland and Salt Lake City, boasting mahogany columns, a stained-glass ceiling and the third elevator installed west of the Mississippi. The hotel closed in 1968 and sat decaying for a quarter century until Barbara Sidway led its restoration, reopening the doors in 1993. Staff and guests since then have reported a recurring presence nicknamed "Reggie," blamed for flickering chandeliers, cold spots on the grand staircase, and a woman's silhouette seen reflected in the lobby's antique mirrors. Baker City ghost tours now stop nightly outside the restored facade, pointing visitors toward the third-floor windows where sightings are most often reported.
