Why is King House (Mayport) said to be haunted?
King House stands at 4627 Ocean Street in Mayport, Florida, on land once used as a Spanish graveyard. An earlier building on the site burned down in 1881, when it served as a boarding house for sailors; the present house was rebuilt in 1907 by William Joseph King and stayed in his family until his son's death in 1977. Researchers from Duke University's Rhine Institute and other paranormal groups later investigated persistent reports of hauntings, including a rocking chair said to move on its own, supposedly linked to a King family aunt reportedly killed there with a pitchfork by a jealous sailor. When the house served as the local Catholic church in the 1940s, congregants reported hearing high heels pacing in the empty attic. Other figures said to remain include a 'Little Butler' who guides visitors to the living room and a maid who reacts sharply to anyone in 'her' kitchen.
