What is Skinwalker?

In Navajo (Diné) tradition, the yee naaldlooshii — literally "it goes on all fours" — is a malevolent witch who has broken the deepest taboos of the tribe to gain the power of shapeshifting into an animal, usually a coyote, wolf, owl, fox, or crow. Diné oral tradition situates the ability within ceremonies practiced long before European contact, though the term entered English-language popular culture mainly through 20th-century reporting near the Four Corners region, including a wave of unexplained cattle mutilations and night visitors around Utah's so-called "Skinwalker Ranch" starting in the 1990s. Witnesses describe a figure running unnaturally fast on two legs before dropping to four, with eyes that reflect light "the wrong color" in headlights. Navajo elders have long asked outsiders not to sensationalize or retell the belief carelessly, since within the culture it is treated as a serious spiritual matter rather than campfire entertainment. One rancher near the reservation border told investigators in the 1990s: "It looked at me like it knew exactly what I was thinking." Skeptics point to sleep paralysis, misidentified coyotes, and the psychological power of a story that discourages trespassing onto sacred or private land.
